Portugal Invests €700 Million to Strengthen Transport Infrastructure in Alentejo

Portugal is stepping up investment in regional transport infrastructure. Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) plans to invest approximately €700 million in the Alentejo region by the end of 2028, supporting the development and improvement of local road and rail infrastructure.

Secretary of State for Infrastructure Hugo Espírito Santo announced the investment plan following the inauguration of a new section of the IP2 eastern corridor near Évora. He noted that IP’s work in Alentejo over the coming years will not be limited to a small number of major projects, but will also include a range of road and rail improvements of different scales.

Under the current plan, the approximately €700 million investment will be deployed progressively through the end of 2028 and will cover three districts in the Alentejo region.

Road and Rail Infrastructure to Advance in Parallel

The investment will cover both road and rail projects, reflecting Portugal’s broader efforts to improve regional transport networks and strengthen connectivity between different parts of the country.

Hugo Espírito Santo pointed out that while major infrastructure projects tend to attract greater public attention, smaller regional projects also play an important role in the development of the overall transport network.

“With €700 million, a great deal of work can be carried out. We may not see every project marked by the same kind of major ceremony, but these projects are indeed becoming a reality,” he said.

The investment plan was announced as the new eastern connection of the IP2 corridor to Évora officially entered into service. As additional road and rail projects move forward, Alentejo’s transport infrastructure is expected to become increasingly comprehensive.

Infrastructure Investment to Strengthen Regional Development

Alentejo covers a large geographical area, with cities and economic activities relatively dispersed across the region. Transport networks therefore play a particularly important role in improving internal connectivity and strengthening links with other economic centres in Portugal.

Continued improvements to road and rail infrastructure affect not only everyday mobility but also business logistics, workforce movement and economic links between cities. Better transport connectivity can also provide an important foundation for attracting businesses and long-term investment to the region.

In recent years, Portugal has continued to upgrade transport infrastructure across the country. The latest €700 million investment demonstrates that this effort extends beyond major national projects to the ongoing improvement of regional transport networks.

In the long term, the value of infrastructure investment goes beyond roads and railways themselves. Its broader impact can be seen in improved regional connectivity, industrial development, and the development potential of land and urban areas. As these projects are progressively implemented, Alentejo is expected to become better connected with the rest of Portugal, creating stronger foundations for the region’s future economic development and investment.
