Portugal Accelerates Its Push into the Space Economy as High-Value Technology Industries Gain Momentum

Portugal is gradually establishing a stronger presence in the emerging global space economy.

In recent years, the country has participated in a growing number of European space projects, while universities, research institutions and technology companies have continued to build expertise in the sector. Portugal’s role is now beginning to evolve—from contributing to European research and industrial cooperation to developing its own technologies and bringing them to market.

Recently, Portuguese space technology company Neuraspace raised $18 million in a new funding round, drawing renewed attention to the country’s growing space technology sector.

The company specializes in AI-powered satellite monitoring and space traffic management, providing satellite operators with solutions for orbital tracking, collision risk prediction and related operations. As the number of satellites in orbit continues to increase rapidly, these capabilities are becoming increasingly important.

Space Is Becoming a New Pillar of Global Infrastructure

In the past, the space industry was primarily associated with scientific research, exploration and defence. Today, however, the rapid expansion of commercial satellites and low-Earth-orbit networks is turning space infrastructure into an increasingly important part of the global economy.

Communications, navigation, weather forecasting, agriculture, transportation, financial services and defence all rely on satellite systems to varying degrees.

At the same time, the growing number of satellites and space debris in orbit is creating new demand for space traffic management. The ability to monitor satellites in real time, predict potential collisions and improve the efficiency of orbital operations is becoming an increasingly important segment of the global space industry.

This is precisely the area in which Neuraspace is developing its capabilities. By combining artificial intelligence with data analytics, the company aims to improve satellite safety and help operators manage orbital assets more efficiently.

For Portugal, the emergence of companies such as Neuraspace also signals a broader shift in how the country participates in the global space industry—from contributing to international projects to developing its own technologies and commercial solutions.

Portugal Is Attracting More High-Value Technology Investment

Looking beyond the space industry, Portugal has also been attracting technology investment across a growing range of strategic sectors in recent years.

Data centres, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, submarine telecommunications cables, renewable energy and space technology may belong to different industries, but they depend on many of the same underlying strengths: reliable energy supply, advanced digital infrastructure, highly skilled talent, strong research capabilities and access to the wider European market.

Together, these investments point to a gradual transformation in Portugal’s economic landscape.

For many years, tourism, real estate and quality of life have been among the defining features of Portugal’s international image. As investment in technology and infrastructure continues to grow, however, the country is building another layer of competitiveness—positioning itself as a European destination for high-value technologies, digital infrastructure and innovation-driven industries.

From Attracting Investment to Building Industrial Capabilities

Of course, attracting investment alone does not mean that Portugal’s economic transformation is complete.

The next challenge will be to turn promising start-ups and research capabilities into internationally competitive companies and stronger industrial clusters, while continuing to improve access to innovation financing, develop skilled talent and increase the efficiency with which major projects are implemented.

Nevertheless, the development of companies such as Neuraspace sends an important signal: Portugal is beginning to establish a presence in high-technology industries whose potential markets extend far beyond the size of its domestic economy, allowing the country to compete globally through knowledge, technology and specialized expertise.

Portugal’s future international competitiveness may therefore no longer rest solely on tourism, climate and quality of life. As artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, clean energy and space technology continue to develop, technological capabilities are emerging as a new source of growth for the Portuguese economy.
