European Royals Choose Portugal for Their Studies, Highlighting the Country’s Growing Appeal for International Education
14 Aug 2026, 14:30

Lisbon is set to welcome another member of a European royal family. The Norwegian Royal Family recently announced that Prince Sverre Magnus, the 20-year-old son of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been accepted into Forward College and will begin the first year of a bachelor’s degree in Business and Management in Lisbon this September.
Notably, this is not the first time the college has attracted a member of a European royal family. Infanta Sofía, daughter of Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, also chose Lisbon as the first stop in her university education, studying Politics and International Relations at Forward College.
Lisbon Becomes an Important Destination for International Education
Prince Sverre Magnus will begin his first year of studies in Lisbon, with courses including introductory economics, statistics and accounting. After completing the Lisbon stage of his degree, he will continue his studies in Paris before moving on to Berlin.
Forward College follows a multi-city academic model, allowing students to complete different stages of their studies in several European cities. Lisbon’s role as an important starting point within this international education model further reflects the Portuguese capital’s growing profile in international education and its ability to attract talent from around the world.
Infanta Sofía of Spain similarly arrived in Lisbon last September and, after completing her first year of university studies in the city, will continue her education in Paris. With two young members of European royal families choosing Lisbon for their higher education, the city is gaining further recognition as an attractive destination for international students to study and live.
International Education Strengthens Lisbon’s Appeal
In recent years, Lisbon has evolved beyond its position as one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations, increasingly becoming a preferred choice for international students, young professionals and families seeking to establish a long-term base abroad.
As the capital of an EU member state, Lisbon offers an international education environment, a multilingual society and well-developed urban infrastructure, while also providing strong connections to other major European cities. Together, these advantages offer international students an environment that combines education, lifestyle and cross-cultural experiences.
The growing presence of international schools, higher education institutions and English-taught programmes is also making Portugal’s education landscape increasingly diverse. For international families considering long-term life in Europe, access to quality education has become an important factor when assessing a city’s long-term appeal.
The decision by two young members of European royal families to include Lisbon as an important part of their university education also reflects Portugal’s growing attractiveness in terms of international education, urban safety, quality of life and its increasingly international environment.
As more international students and families choose Portugal, education-driven population flows are also likely to support demand for housing, local services and consumer spending. Lisbon is gradually evolving from a traditional tourism destination into an increasingly international European city with strong education, lifestyle, talent and global connectivity.
