Renewable Energy Accounted for 75% of Portugal’s Electricity Generation Through July
11 Aug 2026, 22:00

According to data from the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN), 75% of the electricity generated in Portugal between January 1 and July 31 came from renewable energy sources.
The association noted that although this figure was three percentage points lower than a year earlier, Portugal maintained its leading position in Europe, ranking fourth among the European countries analysed, behind only Norway, Denmark and Austria.
APREN also highlighted that during this period, renewable energy generation was sufficient to fully meet electricity consumption in mainland Portugal for 694 non-consecutive hours, equivalent to approximately 29 full days.
In July 2026, renewable energy accounted for 70.5% of monthly electricity generation, reaching 2,554 GWh out of a total of 3,611 GWh.
According to APREN, solar photovoltaic energy led electricity generation during the month, accounting for 25.8% of total production. Hydropower ranked second at 21%, followed by wind power at 17.7%.
From an economic perspective, the association reported that the average price in the MIBEL electricity market during the first seven months of the year stood at €57.3/MWh, representing an average decline of 10.0% compared with the same period in 2025.
APREN also estimated that renewable energy generation during this period avoided the need to import €667 million worth of natural gas and €374 million worth of electricity, while also saving approximately €423 million in CO₂ emission allowance costs.
In terms of installed capacity, APREN highlighted that renewable energy represented 79.5% of Portugal’s total installed electricity generation capacity by the end of June 2026. Since 2016, renewable capacity has increased by 9,143 MW, representing growth of 68.2%.
The association also noted that renewable energy integration remains lower in Portugal’s autonomous regions. During the first half of 2026, renewable sources accounted for 46.1% of total electricity generation in Madeira and 31.5% in the Azores.
Overall, although the share of renewable electricity generation declined slightly compared with the previous year, the fact that 75% of Portugal’s electricity came from renewable sources continues to highlight the country’s leading position in Europe’s energy transition. Renewable energy is not only delivering environmental benefits but also generating tangible economic value. As clean energy capacity continues to expand, Portugal’s energy advantages could further strengthen its attractiveness to international investment and emerging industries.
