Portugal is stepping up efforts to showcase its attractiveness as an investment destination to international capital. On September 22, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro attended an event at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), where he presented Portugal as an investment destination for U.S. and other international investors, while emphasizing the importance of further strengthening economic ties between Portugal and the United States.
The event formed part of Montenegro’s visit to the United States for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. It brought together representatives of Portuguese and U.S. companies, investors, lawyers and other members of the business community, providing a platform for companies and investors from both countries to establish connections and explore potential business opportunities.
In his remarks, Montenegro said Portugal welcomes U.S. investment and business activity, while highlighting recent developments in the Portuguese economy and public finances. He pointed to the country’s political, financial and social stability, continued economic growth and declining public debt, as well as a series of government reforms aimed at strengthening Portugal’s competitiveness.
The energy transition was also highlighted as one of Portugal’s key advantages in attracting international investment. According to figures presented by the Prime Minister at the NYSE, 75% of the electricity generated in Portugal in 2025 came from renewable sources. Portugal’s geographical position was also highlighted as an advantage, providing connections between European, North American, South American and African markets.
In discussing investment ties between Portugal and the United States, Montenegro specifically highlighted investment by U.S. companies in Portugal. Citing Microsoft as an example, he said the company plans to invest more than $10 billion in Portugal over the coming years, reflecting continued interest from U.S. businesses in the country’s technology and digital infrastructure sectors.
Montenegro also stressed that Portugal and the United States share longstanding historical ties, while noting that there remains considerable scope to deepen their economic relationship. The Portuguese government aims to attract more U.S. capital to Portugal and further strengthen bilateral cooperation in investment and business.
At the end of the event, Montenegro entered the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange to take part in the traditional Closing Bell ceremony. The occasion also provided Portugal with an opportunity to showcase its economic development and investment environment in one of the world’s leading financial markets.
